Taught me how to ride a dirt bike (brakes first), helped me with math (never worked), my first camera, delighted us with endless wheelies, flips in the pool, launches, always made every home we had even more beautiful, helped me with photography projects and sets, didn't make me wear dresses or head coverings when everyone else was doing it (seriously, thanks dad), took us skiing in the mountains, swimming in San Diego, out to the Grand Canyon, to Modesto at least twice a year to see family, provided for all of us crazy kids and mom, taught me what hard work looks like, and taught me to pray, love Jesus, and baptized all of us.... You've set the bar high, Dad. I'll be grateful if I turn out to be half the person you are ❤️️

Humanitarian photography is incredibly important to me. Before I was shooting portraits or weddings, I lived in Mexico for a month as a wide eyed 17-year-old and became so focused on communicating a different way of life. Simpler, seemingly, but still complex. And so much poorer. I got to go to some border towns this past month and had a few hours at 4 non-profits to document some wonderful work that is being done. The magic of photojournalism is that you don't get to plan the moment like a portrait. You have to be on your toes, constantly composing and recomposing, looking for emotion and light, being in the moment but not too disconnected, know when to step in and step out, when to grant privacy and when to record, and above all be respectful. #mexican #mexico #border #reynosa #humanrace #human #humanity #humanitarian #nonprofit #humanitartianphotography #photojournalism #photojournalist #personal #raw #rawlife #authentic #africa #hispanic #refugees #refugeecamp #refugee #vulnerable #vulnerability
